Saving & Investing in India: SIP, FD and Long-Term Goals
The useful question is not simply 'SIP or FD?' Different goals can need different levels of liquidity, certainty, time and investment risk. Start with the goal, then use calculators to understand the numbers behind possible approaches.
1. Define the goal first
Write down the target amount and time horizon before choosing an investment product. A clear goal makes it easier to estimate the contribution required.
2. Understand what SIP means
A Systematic Investment Plan is a way to invest a fixed amount at regular intervals into an eligible investment scheme. The calculator models contributions and assumed growth; it does not predict or guarantee market returns.
3. Model an FD separately
A fixed-deposit projection answers a different question: how a deposit could grow at an assumed rate for a chosen term. Actual bank rates, compounding rules, premature-withdrawal conditions and taxation should be checked with the institution.
4. See the effect of compounding
Time, contributions and the assumed growth rate can materially change a projection. Test several rates instead of relying on one optimistic scenario.
5. Revisit the plan
Income, expenses, goals and risk tolerance change. Periodically compare your current position with the target and update the numbers rather than assuming the original plan remains suitable.

Each calculator is educational and designed for scenario planning. Change the assumptions and compare results rather than relying on one estimate.
