How to Calculate a Tip and Split a Restaurant Bill
Calculate tip percentages, after-tax totals and fair per-person shares, including pre-tax tipping.
Tip percentage formula
Multiply the chosen tip base by the tip percentage divided by 100. For a $80 pre-tax bill and a 20% tip, the tip is $16.
Pre-tax versus after-tax tipping
Many people calculate tips using the pre-tax subtotal. If you use the amount including sales tax instead, the result will differ. Check which base you selected.
Splitting equally
Add the bill, applicable tax and chosen tip, then divide by the number of diners. With an $80 bill, $6 tax and $16 tip, four people each pay $25.50.
Rounding matters
Currency is typically rounded to two decimals. When splitting a total, a one-cent remainder may need to be assigned to one person so the individual amounts sum to the total.
When an equal split is not fair
For groups ordering very different amounts, calculate each guest’s share from their items plus their proportional tax and tip instead.
