Estimated financing cost

General U.S. model: estimated sales tax applies to vehicle price minus trade-in value, not below zero. Fees and any trade payoff are financed; down payment and trade credit reduce financing.

How the estimate treats a trade-in

Trade-in tax treatment varies by state and transaction. This calculator uses a disclosed general model and does not claim to reproduce any state’s rules. A payoff is added back because that debt must be satisfied; negative trade equity therefore increases financing.

Formula and limitations

The loan uses the standard fixed-payment amortization formula with monthly compounding and end-of-month payments. Dealer add-ons, rebates, timing rules, documentation fees and state or local tax differences may change the contract.

Method references

Trade-in and negative-equity handling follows U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau auto-loan guidance. The payment formula is independently cross-checked against Bankrate’s published amortizing-loan formula. Reviewed September 16, 2026.
